A WALK FROM PISTOIA TO LUCCA ON THE TRAIL OF SAINT JAMES
6 DAYS/5 NIGHTS
This walk brings together the five cathedrals of Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Pescia and Lucca, passing through Montecatini Terme. The project provides that you can reach Santiago de Compostela from Rome, passing through the little Santiago.
We will cross quiet lanes which, through vineyards, olive groves, holly woods and old medieval roads, reach ancient villages, Romanesque parish churches and majestic convents, where time seems to have stopped. You will have the opportunity to meet the locals, talk with your travel companions along the way and maybe rest beneath the shade of an oak tree to meditate and find yourselves again.
We will finally reach the two big Tuscan cities of art, Pistoia and Lucca, that will welcome the pilgrims after a long fatigue.
Both cities are a place with a great religious value: the first one due to the presence of Saint James’s relics, the second one due to the presence of over 100 churches. Lucca Cathedral hosts the Holy Face, the well-known and most venerated crucifix: according to an ancient text, it arrived in Lucca in 782 AD and it’s not the first and only Holy Face (it was thought to be a later copy of a lost original). However, it actually dates back to the last decades of the VIII century through the early IX century and, subsequently, it’s the oldest wooden sculpture in the West and it surprisingly arrived intact to these days:
